From storage tips to design suggestions, find out how to keep your garage looking and functioning great

The garage can be one of the most neglected spaces in many homes, collecting more and more clutter until there’s no way you can even think of parking a car in there. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The garage can be one of the most useful spaces--all it takes is a little planning.

A well-organized garage can be somewhere you park your car and store all your tools and extra things efficiently. First things first: you’ll need to clear out the clutter. After that’s done, utilize these five methods to upgrade the space.

Install a Wall Rack

One of the best things you can add to upgrade your garage is a wall rack. No longer will you have to sift through layers of tools to find the right one. With wall storage, all of them are laid out and easily accessible. Wall racks are great for tools of every kind, from garden and lawn devices like rakes and shovels to wrenches, saws, and sockets.

Use the Ceiling

For items you use less frequently, taking advantage of the ceiling of your garage for storage saves loads of space. You can find ceiling racks at most hardware stores, or take a day and install one DIY-style.

Get a Cabinet System

Storing things on the wall or hanging them from the ceiling is great, but those aren’t the only places you can utilize. A cabinet system is a great way to upgrade your garage space. Cabinets are perfect for smaller items or things of which you have duplicates. For more stability, install fitted cabinets. If you plan on moving them eventually, however, opt for free standing ones.

Replace Your Workbench

Having a dedicated workbench--a place where you can return to again and again for all your projects--is ideal. And what better place to work than where all your tools are already stored? A workbench is a perfect upgrade for any garage, and a folding workbench is perfect for the garage where space can be at a premium.

Get a New Door

The garage door is one of the first things anyone will see when they pull up to your home, so make a good impression with one that looks nice. In order to make sure it’s safe and secure, put in a lock that bolts to the sidewalls.
